My friend from Iran was showing me photos from his hometown. One picture showed some of his neighbours including a 16 year-old. She was not wearing a headscarf. My friend said that she always dresses like the boys, goes out like the boys do (un-escorted) and that he thinks she is a lesbian. I can’t believe how brave that person is. Homosexuality is illegal in Iran and those convicted can face the death penalty. Even if she is not a lesbian or part of the LGBTQ+ community, she is still so brave to defy the normal gender roles in a country that still enforces harsh penalties for women.
